“Faith is the stairs that love has built and looks out the windows which hope has opened”
-Charles Haddon Spurgeon, English Baptist Preacher
Over the past weeks, I watched in horror the destruction and the trail of death that hurricanes Jose and Maria left behind. Nature is no respecter of man. As humans, we would like to think that we are masters over nature. Sadly, time and time again, hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes and even wildfires have proven us wrong. In the aftermath of these tragedies, so many unanswered questions came to my mind. Why did God let so many lives be lost in Antigua & Barbuda? And why didn’t He stop Hurricane Maria in its tracks with His thunderous voice in Puerto Rico? After all, His Word says:
The voice of the LORD is upon the waters: the God of glory thundereth: the LORD is upon many waters.
In times of unexplainable catastrophical events, it would be easy to lose one’s faith. Untimely death affects people across all races, socio-economical statuses and age groups. It would be easy to not see God as a loving Father. If we are not firmly anchored in our faith, we can suddenly see Him as an unloving and all-punishing God. However, it is when we do not understand the why’s that our faith must carry us deeper into the arms of the loving Father who will never let us go.
He will never leave you nor forsake you
Faith sees the Mighty Hand of protection of God over His people at all times. It is heartbreaking that the death toll was so huge. However, I am convinced that as much as we mourned, God mourned even more for His precious children for whom His Son died. As I imagined God’s tears rolling down upon the sight of his dead children, I rejoiced in the lives that were spared because of His Grace and His Mercy.
Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
What is Faith?
Faith is always seeing the victory with Christ and in Christ through the good and the bad times. Faith is keeping our eyes on Jesus Christ when our natural circumstances threaten to either destroy or overwhelm us. Faith is unleashing the Christ in us, for we are His face.
As children of the Most High God, we are all carriers of faith everywhere the Lord sends us. When people around us are discouraged or feeling hopeless, through our prayers and our love, our faith must boost theirs, so that the name of Jesus Christ will be glorified in their lives. Every seed of faith, every word of encouragement, every prayer, they all matter to God. For this is the means by which we show the love of the Father towards one another.
But without faith it is impossible to please Him: for he that cometh to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of them that diligently seek Him.
We can absolutely never please God without faith. For faith is the steering wheel that carries you and I to God’s destiny and purpose for us. Faith helps us to see the big picture when all hope seems gone. Faith gives us the peace that surpasses all understanding (Philippians. 4:7) when we are in the eye of the storm. Faith praises God even in the midst of devastating circumstances. Most importantly, faith ALWAYS sees the MIRACLE OF LIFE in death, as Jesus Christ overcame it at the Cross:
The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.
~ John 10:10
A faithless life is not worth living. God wants us to have complete faith in Him and in the power of His love. From season to season, trials will come our way to test the true essence of our relationship with Him. Are we fully committed to Him only when things go right? Or are our lives really His to do as He pleases? For me, faith is not a lonely road but a journey best travelled walking side by side with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
