We have been out of water for the past couple of days. We are a family of five, and our three children are all under 8 years old. You can imagine how much water is needed each day for bathing, cleaning, dishes, cooking, wiping, mopping, washing… the list seems endless. When the water goes, it is sorely missed to say the least! We know better than to be without reserves in the country we live in, however with the reserves we have we are limited to the basic functions: brushing our teeth, washing our faces and our hands….
In these times we are reminded of one of Jesus’ teachings about water.
Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.
~John 7:37-38
What an awesome depiction of the spiritual water we receive from the Lord when we have committed our lives to Him. That living water that He provides is the Holy Spirit that lives within us. That water flows from within us, cleansing, refreshing, washing, doing a marvelous work in us for His glory! All we need to do is to go to Jesus daily and drink, drink, drink! He gives freely, and He never runs out. Some of us like to run on reserves, and we limit ourselves to the very basic functions of the water. But the Lord wants us to come to Him at all times; then those rivers that He provides will flow from within us, spilling over into everyone we come in contact with. How important is it to let that river flow through us? John’s vision in the book of revelation sheds some light on the power that this river provides.
Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb down the middle of the great street of the city. On each side of the river stood the tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations.
~Revelation 22:1-2
So how exactly do we drink from this well of living waters? The answer is very simple: we must spend time with the Lord in prayer! Take the time to fellowship with Him. The more we do that, the more we are drinking. Spending time with God is as essential for a follower of Christ as breathing is to living creatures. As we do this, His Holy Spirit is filling us and cleansing us, giving us more of Him – all for His kingdom and His glory. What I’ve noticed in my own life is that the more I spend time in His presence, the more I am drawn to Him, and the more I want to keep that connection with Him. Those living waters He gives inevitably spill over into the lives of those around us, especially when we allow Him to fill us to overflowing. What are you looking for in this life? What are you thirsting for? Jesus promised you can count on Him to find the best of what He offers by coming to the well of living waters, knowing that He gives freely!
But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience,
kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against
these things!
~Galatians 5:22-23
I pray that all of us who have believed in Jesus would go to Him tirelessly and drink! Amen.
